# Choose Connection Type and Direction

**Audience:** Super Admin, Admin, Supervisor\
**Page type:** Task guide\
**Status:** Draft\
**Owner:** Compassly Documentation Team\
**Last verified:** 2026-04-03

## Purpose

Use this guide to open the Connections landing page, choose the connection type you want to manage, and switch the direction of the connection view.

## Before you start

* You must be signed in to Compassly.
* You must be able to open **System settings → Connections**.

## How to get there

1. Sign in to Compassly.
2. In the left navigation, select **System settings**.
3. Select **Connections**.

## Steps

1. On the **Connections** landing page, open the **Connection type** dropdown.
2. Select one of the available connection types:
   * **Clients to team members**
   * **Team members to team members**
   * **Locations to users**
   * **Services to team members**
   * **Teams to team members**
3. In the **Access type** control, review the current direction.
4. If needed, use the center switch button to flip the direction of the connection view.
5. Click **Apply**.

## What the switch button does

The switch button changes what you are searching for and what you are managing.

Examples:

* **Client → team members** means you start from one client and see which team members are connected to that client.
* **Team member → clients** means you start from one team member and see which clients are connected to that team member.

## Role differences

* **Super Admin / Admin / Supervisor:** Can open the Connections landing page and load connection views.
* **Clinician / Basic:** Do not have access to the Connections section based on the current permissions matrix.

## What happens next

After you click **Apply**, Compassly opens the selected connection view. Continue to the guide for that specific connection type and direction.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://compassly.gitbook.io/compassly-docs/administration/system-settings/connections/choose-connection-type-and-direction.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
