# Clone Role

**Page Type:** Task Guide\
**Audience:** Super Admin, Admin\
**Status:** Draft\
**Owner:** Compassly Documentation Team\
**Last Verified:** 2026-04-03

## Purpose

Use this guide to duplicate an existing role and use it as the starting point for a new custom role.

## Before you start

* You must have permission to clone roles.
* You must already be on the **Roles** list.
* Cloning copies the role structure and permissions, but it should not be treated as a way to change a built-in **System** role directly.

## How to get there

1. Log in to Compassly.
2. Select **System settings**.
3. Select **Roles**.

## Steps

1. On the **Roles** list, find the role you want to clone.
2. Open the row action menu and select **Clone**.
3. Enter a title for the new role.
4. Review the warning or confirmation message, if one appears.
5. Open the newly created role and adjust permissions or assigned users as needed.
6. Save the cloned role.
7. Confirm the new role appears in the Roles list.

## Role differences

* **Super Admin** and **Admin** can clone roles.
* Cloning is best used to create a new **Custom** role based on an existing setup.
* Built-in **System** roles remain fixed even when used as the source for a clone.

## What happens next

After cloning a role, review the new role carefully and update the name, permissions, status, or assigned users before using it in production.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://compassly.gitbook.io/compassly-docs/administration/system-settings/roles/clone-role.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
