# Create Custom Role

**Page Type:** Task Guide\
**Audience:** Super Admin, Admin\
**Status:** Draft\
**Owner:** Compassly Documentation Team\
**Last Verified:** 2026-04-03

## Purpose

Use this guide to create a new custom role with the permissions your team needs.

## Before you start

* You must have permission to create roles.
* You must already be on the **Roles** list.
* Have a clear role title and permission set ready before you begin.

## How to get there

1. Log in to Compassly.
2. Select **System settings**.
3. Select **Roles**.

## Steps

1. On the **Roles** list, click the **+** button to create a new role.
2. Enter a clear, descriptive title for the role.
3. Review each permission category and turn the required permissions on or off.
4. Set the role status if the page includes an active or assignable toggle.
5. Assign users now if needed, or leave that step for later.
6. Click **Save**, **Apply**, or the equivalent confirmation button.
7. Confirm the new custom role appears in the Roles list.

## Role differences

* **Super Admin** and **Admin** can create roles based on the current permissions matrix.
* Only **Custom** roles can be created. Built-in **System** roles are fixed by the platform.

## What happens next

After you create a role, you can review it, edit it further, clone it as a template, or assign users to it.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://compassly.gitbook.io/compassly-docs/administration/system-settings/roles/create-role.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
