# Import Maladaptives

**Audience:** Super Admin, Admin\
**Page type:** Task guide\
**Owner:** Product / Training / Support\
**Status:** Verified\
**Last verified:** 2026-04-08

## Purpose

Import maladaptives into the **Program Library** from the official Excel template.

## Before you start

* You must have permission to import Program Library items.
* You must be on **Program Library** > **Maladaptives**.
* Use the template downloaded from the current Compassly UI.
* Compassly validates the file before upload.

## Role differences

* **Super Admin, Admin:** Can import maladaptives.
* Lower-access roles may be able to view the library but may not see import actions.

## How to get there

1. Sign in to Compassly.
2. Select **Program Library**.
3. Select **Maladaptives**.
4. Select **Import maladaptives**.

## Prepare the template

1. Download the official import template from the download menu.
2. Open the Excel file on your computer.
3. Enter one maladaptive per row.
4. Complete all required fields in the exact format expected by the template.
5. If you fill in a description field pair, make sure both parts of the description are completed.
6. Save the finished file as an Excel file before uploading it.

## Start the import

1. Select **Import maladaptives**.
2. In the import dialog, drag and drop the file into the dashed box, or select the box to browse for the file.
3. After you choose the file, confirm the file name appears inside the dashed upload area.

## Understand the validation message

After the file is selected, Compassly validates the file before upload.

You should then see:

* the uploaded file name in the dashed box
* a validation message below the box showing how many records passed validation
* the current state of the **Upload** button

## If 0 records passed validation

1. Review the validation message.
2. If the dialog says **0 records passed validation**, the **Upload** button stays disabled.
3. Select **Cancel**.
4. Correct the template file.
5. Start the import again with the corrected file.

## If 1 or more records passed validation

1. Review the validation message.
2. If the dialog says **1 record passed validation** or more, the **Upload** button becomes available.
3. Select **Upload**.

## What you may see after upload

After upload, Compassly can show one of these outcomes:

### Successful import

You may see a success message such as:

* **1 maladaptive was successfully imported**
* or a similar success message for multiple records

### Duplicate or failed import

If the uploaded rows already exist, Compassly can show a failure message such as:

* **All maladaptives with provided details already exist**

## Notes

* The file name remains visible in the dashed box after you select the file.
* Validation happens before upload, not after upload.
* If no rows pass validation, you cannot continue with the upload from that dialog state.
* Maladaptive names are treated as duplicates even if they differ only by letter casing.

## What happens next

After a successful import, the newly imported maladaptives appear in the Program Library list.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://compassly.gitbook.io/compassly-docs/core-modules/clients/maladaptives/import-maladaptives.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
