# Assign Medication to Client

## Purpose

Use this guide to assign an existing Medication library record to a client.

## Before you start

Before assigning a medication to a client, confirm the following:

* You can open **Medications → Client medications**.
* The medication already exists in the Medication library.
* You know which client will receive the medication.
* You have the medication schedule and description details needed for the assignment.

## Required fields

These fields are required when assigning a medication to a client:

* **Client**
* **Medication**
* **Dosage form**
* **Dosage**
* **Dosage unit**
* **Usage method**
* **Start date**
* **Frequency**
* **Time group**
* **Quantity**
* **General description**
* **Side effects**

These fields are optional:

* **End date**
* **Details**

## Important

When using this flow, **Medication** is selected from the existing Medication library as a dropdown value.

## Snapshot behavior

When a library medication is assigned to a client, the client medication record stores a snapshot of the information used at the time of assignment.

Later changes to the library record do not retroactively change existing client medication records.

## How to get there

1. Sign in to Compassly.
2. Select **Medications** in the left navigation.
3. Select **Client medications**.
4. Start the action to assign a medication from the page controls available in your workspace.

## Steps

1. Start a new medication assignment.
2. Select the **Client**.
3. Choose the **Medication** from the Medication library dropdown.
4. Complete the medication setup fields:
   * **Dosage form**
   * **Dosage**
   * **Dosage unit**
   * **Usage method**
5. Complete the schedule fields:
   * **Start date**
   * optional **End date**
   * **Frequency**
   * **Time group**
6. If needed, use the small control next to **Frequency** to enter specific calendar dates for schedules that require exact days of the month.
7. Enter optional **Details**, if needed.
8. Enter **Quantity**.
9. Enter **General description** and **Side effects**.
10. Review the information.
11. Click **Apply** to save the assignment.

## Time group

**Time group** is used to define when the medication should be given during the day.

Available values are:

* **Morning**
* **Afternoon**
* **Evening**

You can choose one, two, or all three values as allowed by the form.

## Role differences

* **Super Admin / Admin / Supervisor / Clinician:** Can assign a medication to a client.
* **Basic:** Cannot assign a medication to a client.

## What happens next

After you save the assignment, the medication appears in the client medication list and becomes available for medication logging based on its schedule.
