# Apply a Shift Template to the Schedule

**Page type:** Task Guide\
**Status:** Draft\
**Owner:** Compassly Documentation Team\
**Last verified:** 2026-07-08\
**Audience:** Super Admin, Admin, Supervisor, Clinician, Basic

## What This Section Covers

This material covers how to stamp an existing Shift Template onto the schedule for a specific week, instead of building a shift from scratch.

## Before You Start

* You must have permission "Apply shift templates".
* At least one Shift Template must already exist. If none exist, you'll see a message telling you to create one first — see [Shift Template Library](/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-template-library.md).

## Where To Start

1. Sign in to Compassly.
2. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shifts***.
3. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shift Management*** from the dropdown menu under ***Shifts***.
4. Click ***Apply Shift Template*** in the page header.

#### OR

1. Open ***Shift Management*** and switch to ***Table*** view.
2. Click ***Apply Shift Template***.

## Available Actions

1. **Choose the target week.**
   * Pick the calendar week you want the template applied to. If you opened this from ***Day*** or ***Week*** view, the target week is pre-filled based on what you were already looking at; from ***Month*** view, you'll need to pick it yourself.
2. **Choose a location, if applying from Table view.**
   * ***Table*** view spans multiple locations, so you'll pick which location's schedule you're applying the template to. From ***Day***, ***Week***, or ***Month*** view, the location is already set to whichever one you're currently viewing.
3. **Choose the Shift Template.**
   * The dropdown only lists templates that belong to the selected location.
4. **Choose whether it repeats.**
   * Select ***Does not repeat*** (or ***Never***) to apply it only to the target week, or ***Until end week*** to repeat it every week through a week you specify.
5. **Click Apply.**
   * The template's time blocks are created as real shifts on the selected week(s), inheriting whatever Team Member, Client(s), or blank assignment the template itself had.

## Role Differences

* ***Super Admin / Admin / Supervisor:*** Can apply a template to any location they have access to.
* ***Clinician / Basic:*** Has this permission by default, but since they cannot open the Shift Template Library, they can only apply templates that someone else has already built.

## Summary Of Section

**Upon reviewing this material, you should be able to:**

* Apply a Shift Template to a specific week
* Understand the difference between applying it once and repeating it until a given week

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://compassly.gitbook.io/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/apply-shift-template.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
