# Clone a Shift

**Page type:** Task Guide\
**Status:** Draft\
**Owner:** Compassly Documentation Team\
**Last verified:** 2026-07-08\
**Audience:** Super Admin, Admin, Supervisor, Clinician, Basic

## What This Section Covers

This material covers how to use an existing shift as a starting point for a new one, instead of filling out every field from scratch.

## Before You Start

* You must have permission "Manage shifts and notes".
* Cloning works on a shift in any status, but only creates one new shift at a time — it's not available as a bulk action.

## Where To Start

1. Sign in to Compassly.
2. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shifts***.
3. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shift Management*** from the dropdown menu under ***Shifts***.
4. Open the action menu on the shift you want to copy — from its snippet on the calendar, or its row in Table view — and select ***Clone***.

## Available Actions

1. **Review the pre-filled Add Shift screen.**
   * Cloning doesn't create a shift immediately — it opens the Add Shift screen with the Team Member, Client(s), Service, Date, and Start/End Time all pre-filled from the source shift. The location is locked to the source shift's location and can't be changed.
2. **Know what doesn't carry over.**
   * The Progress Note (Brief Summary, Individual Notes, signatures) and any file attachments are never copied, even if the source shift has them filled in. The cloned shift's Progress Note starts completely empty. Recurrence is always reset to ***Does not repeat***, regardless of what the source shift had.
3. **Adjust anything you need to, then save.**
   * Change the date, time, or assignment as needed, then use ***Update***, ***Publish***, or ***Sign & Publish*** just like adding any new shift. See [Add a New Shift](/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/add-new-shift.md).

## Role Differences

* ***Super Admin / Admin / Supervisor:*** Can clone any shift they have access to.
* ***Clinician / Basic:*** Can clone shifts assigned to themselves.

## Summary Of Section

**Upon reviewing this material, you should be able to:**

* Clone a shift to save time re-entering its details
* Know that the Progress Note and attachments never carry over to the clone

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://compassly.gitbook.io/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/clone-shift.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
