## What This Section Covers

This material covers how to change a shift's schedule or assignment after it's been created, and what happens to a Template-status shift as you fill in more of its fields.

## Before You Start

* You must have permission "Manage shifts and notes".
* A shift in **Published (Note Signed)** status cannot be edited directly — see [Unlock and Edit a Signed Progress Note](/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/unlock-signed-progress-note.md) first.
* If your role does not include "Manage Progress Notes of Other Team Members," you can only edit shifts assigned to yourself.

## Where To Start

1. Sign in to Compassly.
2. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shifts***.
3. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shift Management*** from the dropdown menu under ***Shifts***.
4. Click the shift you want to change.

## Available Actions

1. **Change the date or time.**
   * Update the Start Date, Start Time, End Date, and End Time as needed. These four fields are always required, even on a shift in **Template** status.
2. **Change the Team Member.**
   * Changing an already-assigned Team Member opens a confirmation, since it resets the Client, Service, Brief Summary, and Individual Notes on the shift — this can't be undone. Removing the Team Member entirely also clears the Service field automatically.
3. **Change the Client(s).**
   * Changing an already-assigned Client works the same way — it resets the Team Member, Service, Brief Summary, and Individual Notes, and asks you to confirm first.
4. **Add or change the Service.**
   * Service only becomes selectable once a Team Member is chosen. Changing the Service resets any Individual Notes already filled in, since notes are tied to Service-specific form templates.
5. **If the shift is in Template status: know what promotes it.**
   * A Template-status shift has no Service, so it has no Progress Note section yet, and its Service field always opens empty regardless of anything entered previously. Adding a Team Member or Client alone does not change its status. The moment you add a Service and save, the shift is promoted to **Unpublished** — and it can never go back to Template status after that.
6. **Save your changes.**
   * Click ***Update*** to save without changing the shift's visibility, ***Publish*** to make it visible on the schedule, or ***Sign & Publish*** to publish and sign the Progress Note in one step, if the shift qualifies. See [Understand Shift Statuses](/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/understand-shift-statuses.md) for what each option does.
   * If your changes create a scheduling conflict, you'll see a **Shift overlap detected** message before the save completes. See [Understand Shift Overlap Validation](/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/understand-shift-overlap-validation.md).

## Role Differences

* ***Super Admin / Admin / Supervisor:*** Can edit any shift they have access to.
* ***Clinician / Basic:*** Can only edit shifts assigned to themselves.

## Summary Of Section

**Upon reviewing this material, you should be able to:**

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://compassly.gitbook.io/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/edit-shift.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
