# Publish a Shift

**Page type:** Task Guide\
**Status:** Draft\
**Owner:** Compassly Documentation Team\
**Last verified:** 2026-07-08\
**Audience:** Super Admin, Admin, Supervisor, Clinician, Basic

## What This Section Covers

This material covers how to publish a shift so it becomes visible to the assigned team member, and how to unpublish one if it needs to come back off the schedule.

## Before You Start

* You must have permission "Manage shifts and notes".
* A shift needs a Service assigned before it can be published — a **Template**-status shift has to be promoted to **Unpublished** first. See [Edit Shift Details](/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/edit-shift.md).
* Only a shift in **Published (Note Unsigned)** status can be unpublished. A signed shift has to be unlocked first — see [Unlock and Edit a Signed Progress Note](/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/unlock-signed-progress-note.md).

## Where To Start

1. Sign in to Compassly.
2. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shifts***.
3. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shift Management*** from the dropdown menu under ***Shifts***.
4. Click the shift you want to publish or unpublish.

## Available Actions

1. **Publish a Template or Unpublished shift.**
   * Click ***Publish***. The shift moves to **Published (Note Unsigned)** status and becomes visible to the assigned team member. If you'd rather sign the Progress Note at the same time, click ***Sign & Publish*** instead.
2. **Unpublish a shift.**
   * On a shift in **Published (Note Unsigned)** status, click ***Unpublish*** and confirm. The shift returns to **Unpublished** status — its Progress Note content is kept, nothing is lost, but the shift is no longer visible to the assigned team member.

## Role Differences

* ***Super Admin / Admin / Supervisor:*** Can publish or unpublish any shift they have access to.
* ***Clinician / Basic:*** Can publish or unpublish shifts assigned to themselves.

## Summary Of Section

**Upon reviewing this material, you should be able to:**

* Publish a shift so it's visible on the schedule
* Unpublish a shift without losing its Progress Note content

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://compassly.gitbook.io/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/publish-shift.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
