# Unlock and Edit a Signed Progress Note

**Page type:** Task Guide\
**Status:** Draft\
**Owner:** Compassly Documentation Team\
**Last verified:** 2026-07-08\
**Audience:** Super Admin, Admin, Supervisor

## What This Section Covers

This material covers how to unlock a shift whose Progress Note has already been signed, so it can be corrected and re-signed.

## Before You Start

* You must have permission "Unlock progress notes". Without it, the ***Unlock and Edit*** button will not appear at all — there is no other way to unlock a signed note from within Compassly.
* Only a shift in **Published (Note Signed)** status can be unlocked. See [Understand Shift Statuses](/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/understand-shift-statuses.md).

## Where To Start

1. Sign in to Compassly.
2. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shifts***.
3. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shift Management*** from the dropdown menu under ***Shifts***.
4. Click the signed shift you need to correct.

## Available Actions

1. **Open the signed shift.**
   * A signed shift opens in read-only view, showing its schedule, assignment, Progress Note, and Signature block, along with ***Export PDF*** and ***Unlock and Edit*** buttons.
2. **Click Unlock and Edit.**
   * The shift's status changes to **Published (Note Unsigned)**, and you're taken to the edit screen with the Brief Summary, Individual Notes, and schedule/assignment fields all editable again.
3. **Make your corrections.**
   * Update whatever needs to change — the schedule, the assignment, or the Progress Note text.
4. **Re-sign the shift when you're done.**
   * Click ***Sign*** to lock the corrected note back into **Published (Note Signed)** status.

## Role Differences

* ***Super Admin / Admin / Supervisor:*** Can unlock and edit any signed shift they have access to.
* ***Clinician / Basic:*** Cannot unlock a signed note — the ***Unlock and Edit*** button does not appear for these roles. If a signed note needs a correction, ask a Supervisor, Admin, or Super Admin to unlock it.

## Summary Of Section

**Upon reviewing this material, you should be able to:**

* Unlock a signed shift so it can be edited
* Make corrections and re-sign the shift

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://compassly.gitbook.io/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/unlock-signed-progress-note.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
