## What This Section Covers

This material covers what you'll see when you open a shift, and how what's shown — and what you can do from there — changes depending on the shift's status.

## Before You Start

* You must have permission "Manage shifts and notes".
* You can only open shifts you have access to. See [View My Assigned Shifts](/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/view-my-shifts.md) for how visibility is scoped by role.

## Where To Start

1. Sign in to Compassly.
2. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shifts***.
3. In the left navigation menu, select ***Shift Management*** from the dropdown menu under ***Shifts***.
4. Click any shift on the calendar.

## Available Actions

1. **Review the shift's schedule and assignment.**
   * The shift details show its date, start and end time, assigned Location, Team member, Client(s), and Service. If your device's time zone is different from the shift's location, a time zone note is shown next to the time.
2. **Review the Progress Note.**
   * The Brief Summary and Individual Note(s) are shown below the schedule details, if the shift has a Service assigned. A shift in **Template** status has no Progress Note section at all — see [Understand Shift Statuses](/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/understand-shift-statuses.md).
3. **Check for attached files.**
   * If any files were attached to the shift, a Files section lists each one with a download icon. If no files are attached, this section doesn't appear.
4. **Review the Signature block, if the shift is signed.**
   * Once a shift's note has been signed, a Signature block appears showing who signed it and when. All fields on the shift become read-only.
5. **Use the buttons available for the shift's current status.**
   * What you can do next depends on where the shift is:
     * **Template** or **Unpublished:** ***Update***, ***Publish***, or ***Sign & Publish***.
     * **Published (Note Unsigned):** ***Update*** or ***Sign***.
     * **Published (Note Signed):** ***Export PDF***, and ***Unlock and Edit*** if your role has the "Unlock progress notes" permission — the shift is otherwise read-only.

## Role Differences

* ***Super Admin / Admin / Supervisor:*** Can view and act on any shift they have location and permission access to.
* ***Clinician / Basic:*** Only has access to: viewing shifts assigned to themselves.

## Summary Of Section

**Upon reviewing this material, you should be able to:**

* Open a shift and read its schedule, assignment, and Progress Note
* Recognize what a signed shift's Signature block means
* Know which action buttons to expect based on the shift's status

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://compassly.gitbook.io/compassly-docs/core-modules/shifts/shift-management/view-shift-details.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
